With the much needed upgrade to Play Books (formerly Google Books) comes the realization that independent bookstores weren’t making much money (nor was Google) off their agreement with Google, so the partner program as axed. I say, hoorah! It’s time for independent bookstores to think independently.

Honestly, how is this hurting independent bookstores who shouldn’t have gone that rout anyhow? Look at All Romance/OmniLit, Rainbow eBooks, 1 Place for Romance, TLA and a host of other independent bookstores offering eBooks the right way on their web sites. How is it these bookstores can find a way while other bookstores can’t? Lord knows there’s a lot of shopping cart options for retailers to choose from, all of which can be designed using CSS to have their own look and feel. So why again is Google’s decision a bad thing? How is Google hurting independent bookstores?

Perhaps instead of demonizing Google for doing the right thing, these bookstores should use  their brains to come up with a viable solution. Move with the times or be left behind, that’s the lesson independent bookstores should have learned years ago.
